A Great Day For MetNation As They Get Both A New General Manager And A New Catcher By Rich Coutinho Met Beat Reporter @ The New York

It was a great day for Met fans yesterday as they signed catcher James McCann and then roped in a new general manager. And in both cases they made outstanding hires that will point the Met off-season in a positive direction,

The new general manager will be Jared Porter who currently has an assistant GM role with the Arizona Diamondbacks and whose resume has all the right experience to fill this role What impresses me the most about him is after serving as an intern for the Red Sox in 2004 he climbed the ladder at that organization In his career he was part of 4 championship teams and has great experience in carving out successful scouting and player development efforts.

More importantly his experience and personality make him a perfect fit to blend with Sandy Alderson and being from the Theo Epstein tree he knows that building a farm system can indeed be coupled with spending money on free agents which is a necessary game plan in today’s business of baseball.

The McCann signing also puts the Mets in a great position as they opted for a 4 year deal with him realizing that pursuing JT Realmuto could limit what else they could add to the roster. In Trevor May and James McCann the Mets have significantly improved their roster and from what I hear they are deep in the mix for both George Springer and Trevor Bauer and in big part that is because they did not overspend on a catcher.

But don’t get me wrong–they got tremendous value from the McCann signing as he will provide some offense but more importantly will lead a pitching staff with solid defense and the days of pitchers on this time preferring not to throw to the #1 catcher are over.

For Porter he inherits a roster that already has key players in the fold both in everyday players and the best pitcher in baseball–Jacob deGrom. And he also comes to an organization that will not be afraid to spend on needed additions to that roster.

All in all, a great day for Met fans as these 2 hires will help formulate this off-season which could quickly become the best in the history of this franchise.
