Last night at Citi, the Mets had an almost perfect night. as they carved out a 7 run inning to put the game out of reach. JD martinez hit a grand slam while Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez went yard as well to round out thescoring.
Meanwhile, Kodai Senga looked great in his return commanding his pitches but had to leave the game with a strained calf and that put a rough feeling on a great night. We will know more this weekend once an MRI is taken but I would assume we are looking at a 2 to 3 week sidelining of the Met ace.
The win put the Mets in sole possession of the first wild card spot as they passed the Braves in the standings. They have done that going an MLB best 18 games over 600 in the past 7 weeks. This lineup continues to be unrelenting making opponents pay for every single mistake as. In this game, the Mets took a Braves error and a few walks intoa seven run inning.
Certainly the Senga injury is concerning but I am sure the Mets will take the next man up approach they have taken all season. They never make excuses or look too far ahead but I am sure if Senga is out for a prolonged period, they ,ay address that before the trade deadline next week.
But I will say this win reminded me of so many recent nights where this team did what they had to do to win with a focus and determination very few team have. And that mindset has put the Mets in the top wild card spot passing a Brave team that many felt was an impossible goal just a few weeks ago.
