A Very Deserving Taijuan Walker Named An All Star By Rich Coutinho, Tne New York Extra/

For Taijuan Walker 2021 has been a very special year from the moment he signed with the Mets as a free agent after a plethora of teams passed on him. It is hard to conceive why teams passed on him as well as where the Mets would be without him. And last night he got the call to get an All Star nod.

The numbers simply do not lie as Walker sports a 2,50 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 90 innings allowing just 63 hits. Walker said last night, “Once I got to the Big Leagues it has always been a goal to be an All Star, to be the best of the best and be around the best players in the league.”

Jacob deGrom who was chosen but decided to stay home endorsed Walker to the All Star decision makers and Walker appreciates that gesture. “Jake is the best pitcher right now and for him to come out and publicly say I should be an All Star means so much to me”, said Walker.

For the Mets once they lost out on Trevor Bauer (which is a godsend right now) they turned to the pursuit of Walker who is a big reason why the Mets sit at 46-38 this morning leading the NL East by four and a half games in the standings as they approach the All Star Break. This news came on the heels of a night where the Mets plated 10 runs in one inning helping them to a 13-4 destruction of the Pirates at Citi. And it got the baseball world thinking I am sure if the Mets offense continues percolating combined with this team’s great pitching it could be lights out in the NL East for the rest of this division.

On this night the Met got homers from Pete Alonso and a grand slam rocket from Francisco Lindor as well as 2 homers from Jonathan Villar who continues to impress every time he is inserted in the lineup. The Mets have 3 more versus the Pirates before the break as they continue to widen that division lead having stayed in that top perch in the division for well over 2 months.
