Mets Get Offense And Defense Behind Walker To Beat The Nats By Rich Coutinho

For most of the week the Mets offense and defense had hot and cold days leaning on their starting pitching to win games. But today both sides of the team had great moments and coupled with 7 shutout innings from Taijuan Walker they cruised to a 4-0 win over the Nationals.

The Mets are now 6-2 at home with all of those games against the NL East . Pete Alonso said after the game, “We played extremely crisp today and were a very tough team to beat.” Alonso crushed a home run but the story on this day was the defense. Albert Almora Jr. made a terrific catch with this game still in doubt on a long drive off the bat of Kyle Schwarber. .

“I was going to leave it all out there”, said Almora ,”because I am an all- out guy that puts the team first. My father taught me you play the game hard and nothing bad will ever happen to you.”

But that was not the only defensive play of the day as Walker picked off Josh Harrison after he led the game off with a single. And both Francisco Lindor and Jonathan Villar made eye popping defensive plays as well. And then there was a relay throw executed perfectly from Michael Conforto to Jonathan Villar to JD Davis that nailed Victor Robles as he tried to stretch a double into a triple.

“We are going keep stringing days like this together and once we do that over a significant period of time it will a lot of fun. Good things will come from today, said Alonso. And his power bat is percolating as well as he has gone yard multiple times this week.

The Red Sox come in on Tuesday for a brief 2 game series before the Mets head on a 7 game road trip to Philly and St Louis. And despite all the stops and starts the Mets are in first place which considering all the obstacles they have been saddled with is quite an accomplishment. And today we got a glimpse of how talented they be offensively and defensively which combined with the best starting rotation in baseball which could keep them in the NL East penthouse for quite a long time.
