David Peterson was rocked around Citizens Bank Park In Philadelphia in his first start of the season but he rebounded nicely at Citi last night guiding the Mets to a 5-1 win over the same Phillies team that rocked Peterson’s world a week or so ago. The win also put the Mets into sole possession of first place in the NL East.
Peterson gave up six runs in four plus innings in Philly but on this night he matched a career high with 10 strikeouts hurling six innings of one run ball. The Met offense jumped on former Met Zack Wheeler getting yet another 3 hit night from the red hot Brandon Nimmo and a 2 run homer from catcher James McCann who put the game sway with his first homer as a Met.
This Met rotation has really illustrated in the last 3 games how deep and talented they are as the trio of Marcus Stroman, David Peterson and Taijuan Walker threw a combined 16.1 innings giving up only 2 runs and striking out well over a batter per innings pitched. And today weather permitting the Phils have to deal with Jacob deGrom the best pitcher in all of baseball.
This team has dealt with a plethora of issues but it does not seem to bother them as they just keep moving in the right direction. “Whether it be the weather or Covid we can not control that stuff”, says Pete Alonso, “and we refuse to dwell on it. It has been a rocky start but I get the sense we are starting to come together and play on the consistent basis that we are capable of playing.’
Alonso is right on target and you get the sense the offense is feeling it with Brandon Nimmo and the left arm of David Peterson gave the Mets all they needed to put this one in the W column. Luis Rojas put it best when he said, “Peterson has such poise and has shown me that time and time again. Even after a rough outing he just goes and corrects the things he needs to correct and he goes after it. So, you’ve got to give the kudos to him.”
And this Met rotation with get even deeper once Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard return from the injured list while the bullpen will get a big jolt once Seth Lugo returns. Even without this trio, the Mets have a 5-1 record in the games Jacob deGrom DID NOT START. If they start supporting him offensively, the sky is the limit for the team that sits atop the NL East in the same city where that OTHER team sits in the basement of the AL East.
And with the best pitcher in the sport going today in Citi the joy in Mets Nation will just keep on trucking the same way the Mets keep on trucking day after day.
