This year the Mets must make the decision about the future of Michael Conforto as he is entering his free agent walk year and they should take his leadership abilities unto that decision making process.
I have covered Conforto from the first moment he arrived on the scene at CitiField in 2015 and that tenure reminds me so much of the path we saw David Wright take. By that I mean he had to extract playing time from an established player in Michael Cuddyer much like Wright had to do and handled it with the same class and dignity.
He performed well on that stage and did great in the playoffs and World Series hitting the ball well as we sometimes forget he crushed 3 post season home runs that year. But he also evolved into a great leader and that was illustrated this past year as he shared so much of his history with players like Brandon Nimmo and Dom Smith helping them understand the path of being a top Met prospect once you hit the major leagues.
I can tell you Conforto is highly respected in every corner of the Met clubhouse and last year when the season ended he had a heart to heart conversation with Luis Rojas talking about commitment to winning. “He talked about the effort aspect to this sport and understanding talent is not always enough”, said Rojas,” and that just shows how much he cares about the team.”
That approach is what Conforto is all about and he brings it to the table every day and you just do not find that on every street corner in this business. His talent is obvious as his .2020 322 Batting Average with power to all fields illustrates but much like David Wright his leadership makes him a very special player.
And that is why I firmly believe signing him to a long term deal should be priority #1 as the Mets prepare for the 2021 season.
